The Thetford Porta Potti 550P is a self-contained toilet with a piston pump flush and a sealed valve that keeps odors in the holding tank. It measures 16.5 inches high by 16.5 wide by 15 deep. The seat and cover are removable for cleaning, and a level indicator shows when the tank needs emptying. An optional MSD is available, but it cannot be used together with the pour-out spout.
Our take
The 550P has a level indicator that shows when the holding tank needs emptying, and a rotating pour-out spout for the job itself. The MSD option is not interchangeable with that spout, so you have to choose one of the two.

A vessel with installed toilet facilities must have an operable marine sanitation device that is labeled or certified. EPA says untreated sewage may not be discharged within three miles from shore, and in a No Discharge Zone treated sewage may not be either.
Check before you buy:
- You have what it needs, since heads may call for 12-volt power, through-hulls and seacocks, or a separate vacuum source.
- It fits the compartment, since Jabsco says an electric toilet needs more space at the rear than a manual one.
- If it could sit below the waterline, you'll fit a vented loop as the maker specifies, since Jabsco warns the vent, not the loop, is what stops the siphon.
