The Taylor Made 11324 is a blue braided dock line, 15 ft long and 3/8 in thick, with a spliced eye in one end and a whipped bitter end that keeps it from fraying. It is double braided and meant for docking, mooring or anchoring. The line stays soft and flexible, so it handles easily, and it resists oil, grease, fuel and mildew. It will not rot when stored wet or dry. The spliced eye is much stronger than a knot.
Our take
The spliced eye on this 15 ft line is much stronger than a knot, which counts at the loop that goes over a cleat or piling. The whipped bitter end keeps the other end from fraying.
From our buying guide
Rope makers disagree on the fiber: Samson calls nylon the right one for its stretch, and Marlow calls polyester the most reliable for mooring lines. Marlow also says wet nylon loses strength.
Check before you buy:
- The diameter suits your boat. Taylor Made pairs 3/8 in line with boats up to 25 ft and 1/2 in line with boats up to 32 ft.
- The line suits your cleats. The Coast Guard handbook's rule of thumb gives 3/8 in line for a 6 in cleat and 1/2 in line for an 8 in cleat.
- Strength figures are compared within one maker, since each labels its figure differently.
