The Taylor Made braided dock line in black is 15 feet long and 3/8 inch in diameter. It is double braided and finishes in a spliced eye, which the maker says is much stronger than a knot. The bitter end is whipped to stop fraying. The line is designed for boats up to 32 feet, and the 3/8 inch size is listed at 7,850 lb for 32 foot boats. It resists mildew, gasoline, grease and oil, and will not rot when stored wet or dry.

Our take

The spliced eye on this 15 foot, 3/8 inch line gives a ready-made loop for a cleat or piling with no knot to tie, and the maker calls it much stronger than a knot. The maker designs the line for boats up to 32 feet, so size up beyond that.

From our buying guide

Rope makers disagree on the fiber: Samson calls nylon the right one for its stretch, and Marlow calls polyester the most reliable for mooring lines. Marlow also says wet nylon loses strength.

Check before you buy:

  • The diameter suits your boat. Taylor Made pairs 3/8 in line with boats up to 25 ft and 1/2 in line with boats up to 32 ft.
  • The line suits your cleats. The Coast Guard handbook's rule of thumb gives 3/8 in line for a 6 in cleat and 1/2 in line for an 8 in cleat.
  • Strength figures are compared within one maker, since each labels its figure differently.
