The Taylor Made 56090 is a transom fender, 10 inches wide and 22 inches long, made of soft flexible vinyl. It is shaped to sit on a sailboat stern or on a swim platform edge up to 4 inches thick. A 3/4 inch tube runs end to end so a securing line can pass through, and the contoured form helps it grip. A rubber football valve lets you set how firm it is.

Our take

The football valve lets you adjust the firmness, and the 3/4 inch tube takes a securing line end to end, so the fender can be tied in place on a stern or platform edge. The soft vinyl and contoured shape are meant to grip.

From our buying guide

Polyform says to use at least three fenders when docking, and Taylor Made's rule of thumb is one for every 10 ft of waterline per side. Both makers hedge their size charts, so allow for your boat and where you moor.

Check before you buy:

  • The size is on that maker's own chart for your boat's length.
  • Your fender line suits the eye, since Polyform says too small a line can cut through a vinyl eye.
  • You'll inflate it to the maker's figure, since two makers say over-inflating voids the warranty.
