The Steiner Safari Ultrasharp is a compact 10x42 roof prism binocular, model 2308, with a central focusing wheel that needs only a short, stepless turn to go from close range to infinity. The housing is polycarbonate Makrolon with a stated temperature range of -20 °C to +70 °C. Finger recesses help grip, including with gloves, and the silicone eyecups fold down for eyeglass wearers.
Our take
The polycarbonate Makrolon housing has a stated range of -20 °C to +70 °C, so cold or hot weather on deck is within its range. Finger recesses are shaped for grip with gloves on, which counts when hands are cold.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
