The Steiner Safari Ultrasharp is a 10x26 roof prism binocular with a 2.6 mm exit pupil. It is rated waterproof and has no image stabilisation. It weighs 10.5 oz, shows a linear field of 302 ft at 1000 yds, and focuses as close as 11 ft. A case, cleaning cloth, neck strap, shoulder strap, objective covers and rain guard come with it.
Our take
At 10x with no image stabiliser, every tremor of your hands is magnified along with the view, and a moving deck adds its own motion. The waterproof rating does cover spray and rain, and at 10.5 oz it is light enough to wear round the neck.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
