The Steiner Military-Marine is a 7x50 Porro prism binocular with fully multi-coated optics and a floating prism mount that absorbs impacts and keeps the optical path aligned. The chassis is Makrolon polycarbonate wrapped in NBR rubber armor. The objectives are 50 mm and the exit pupil is 7.1 mm, with 16 mm of eye relief and fold-down eyecups. Focus is individual per eyepiece and set once. The interior is O-ring sealed against rain and spray. Weight is 36 oz.
Our take
The 7.1 mm exit pupil from 7x power and 50 mm objectives gives a wide, forgiving beam of light at dusk and dawn, which helps on a moving deck. Set-once individual focus means no fiddling when the range keeps changing.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
