The Steiner M830r is an 8x30mm binocular with a floating prism system and a precision mil radian ranging reticle. The housing is Makrolon with rubber armor and is rated to withstand 11 Gs of impact. The optic is sealed with 14-psi dry nitrogen so it stays fogproof. A neck strap, objective cover and rain cap are included.
Our take
The M830r seals 14-psi dry nitrogen into the optic, which gives it fogproof clarity, and it carries a mil radian ranging reticle for estimating distance. Both are built in at a compact 8x30 size, with a housing rated for 11 Gs of impact.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
