The Sirius Signal SB-3L is an all-in-one emergency kit in a dry bag. Its centrepiece is the C-1004 electronic distress light, which flashes an SOS and infrared signal at 75 candelas on three CR123 lithium batteries. The bag also holds a floating IP68 flashlight, a daylight signal mirror, an orange distress flag, a whistle, a waterproof phone pouch, a hand compass, 12 ft of paracord and a first aid kit.
Our take
The C-1004 light flashes SOS and infrared at 75 candelas and runs on user replaceable CR123 batteries. Around it the dry bag adds a signal mirror and orange flag for daytime and a whistle for sound signals, so light, day signals and whistle sit in one bag.
From our buying guide
On US coastal waters, a boat 16 feet or more must carry visual distress signals for day and for night. Some cover only one: an orange flag is day only, and an electric distress light is night only.
Check before you buy:
- You'll reach the required number, which for pyrotechnics is three for day and three for night, since a kit's name is not proof it meets the rule.
- The marked expiry date leaves you time, since a flare's can be no more than 42 months from manufacture, and it's the marked date that counts.
- Anything that needs a launcher has an approved one, and you've checked your state's rules, since the Coast Guard says some states treat them as firearms.
