The Simrad NSS4 12 is a chartplotter with a 12.1 inch glass-to-edge display that you can run by touchscreen, keypad or rotary knob. A Qualcomm 8-core processor drives it, and it has dual front-facing SD card slots for chart and memory cards. It supports Simrad network components such as radar and sonar modules, and the display updates over WiFi. It does not include an internal sounder, so sonar needs a separate sonar module and transducer.
Our take
Touch, buttons and a rotary knob give the NSS4 12 three ways to control it, so you can keep working the menus when a touchscreen alone would be awkward. It has no internal sounder, so sonar needs a separate module and transducer.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
