Manuals

The Simrad NAC-D is an autopilot computer for steer-by-wire boats with electronic vessel control systems. It works with Yanmar VC10/JC10, Volvo IPS/EVC and Yamaha helm master or single-engine systems, and connects to Optimus steering over CAN-bus. Installation needs only two Micro-C connectors, with no extra pump, no rudder sensor and no calibration at the dock. It is steered from a controller such as the AP 44 or AP 48, and it includes the SteadySteer feature.

Our take

Two Micro-C connectors are all the installation this autopilot computer needs, and the maker says there is no extra pump, no rudder sensor and no calibration at the dock. The controller, such as an AP 44 or AP 48, is chosen separately.

From our buying guide

Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.

Check before you buy:

  • The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
  • It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
  • On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
