The Simrad AC70 is the drive computer of an autopilot system. It holds the steering computer and runs the motor and clutch of the drive unit, and it also acts as the interface to the other system components. It is built for rudders using a reversible motor or non-isolated solenoids, with frequency rudder angle feedback. Voltage rating is 12 to 24 volt. It has NMEA0183 connectivity and a connection for an NFU remote control on one channel, and is aimed at boats over 40ft.
Our take
The AC70 holds the steering computer and the motor and clutch electronics, so it is the control box rather than a full pilot; the drive unit and other parts are separate. It takes 12 to 24 volts.
From our buying guide
Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.
Check before you buy:
- The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
- It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
- On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
