The Simrad A2004 is a dedicated autopilot controller aimed at professional mariners on commercial vessels. It has an optically bonded 4.1 inch colour display with a 170 degree viewing angle and a large heavy-duty rotary dial for steering. It supports thruster integration and heavy-duty rudder feedback, offers a configurable work mode, and has certified NMEA 2000 connectivity. Mounting is flush or by bracket.
Our take
Thruster integration and heavy-duty rudder feedback support point to a commercial-vessel controller rather than a small-boat head, and the large rotary dial suits precise course changes. It is a control display, so it is one part of a steering system, not the whole thing.
From our buying guide
Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.
Check before you buy:
- The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
- It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
- On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
