This is the Sierra 18-7968 fuel water separator filter element, a 10 micron replacement for Mercury 35-18458Q4 outboards. It includes a water sensor probe and is intended for Mercury Marine and Mariner V6 EFI engines from 1996 on. Sierra says it removes 99% of emulsified water and is 90% efficient at removing particulate contamination, with a maximum flow rate of 90 gph.
Our take
The 90 gph maximum flow rate alongside 10 micron filtration is a sensible pairing for a fuel injected V6 outboard, since Sierra says such engines need strong filtration, water separation and maximum flow. The water sensor probe is included.
From our buying guide
Parker lists Racor's marine Turbine Series for diesel and biodiesel engines, and Racor says gasoline filters in an enclosed location should use a metal bowl. A micron rating means little without its efficiency.
Check before you buy:
- The efficiency is stated with the micron size. Racor labels its finest element 2 micron and rates it at 98% at 4 microns.
- You know your engine's change interval, since intervals are per model.
- You can fit it on the suction side of the fuel transfer pump, where Racor says to install its 900MA and 1000MA, since pumps emulsify water.
