This Sierra 18-7866 is a 6 inch, high capacity fuel water separator with a 10 micron element. It replaces the Yamaha MAR-FUELF-IL-TR, so it is the match to check for when that part is due for service. The filter is built to separate water from fuel before the fuel reaches the engine. Flow is rated at 90 GPH, enough for even a hungry motor. The filter is rated to remove over 99.8 percent of emulsified water from gasoline, and its 10 micron element is rated over 90 percent efficient at particle removal.

Our take

This suits gasoline owners who need a 10 micron replacement for the Yamaha MAR-FUELF-IL-TR and want 90 GPH flow with water removal rated over 99.8 percent. It is a poor fit for diesel, since it is rated for gasoline. Its main limit is that fuel rating, so diesel owners should look for a filter made for their fuel.

From our buying guide

Parker lists Racor's marine Turbine Series for diesel and biodiesel engines, and Racor says gasoline filters in an enclosed location should use a metal bowl. A micron rating means little without its efficiency.

Check before you buy:

  • The efficiency is stated with the micron size. Racor labels its finest element 2 micron and rates it at 98% at 4 microns.
  • You know your engine's change interval, since intervals are per model.
  • You can fit it on the suction side of the fuel transfer pump, where Racor says to install its 900MA and 1000MA, since pumps emulsify water.
