This is a 3-strand twisted nylon anchor line from Seachoice, white, measuring 1/2 inch in diameter and 250 feet long. It comes with a galvanized steel thimble fitted, so an anchor can be attached straight to it. The maker says the line is built to absorb sudden shock loads, which is the job of a nylon rode when a boat snubs against its anchor. No chain is mentioned as part of this product, and no breaking strength is given.

Our take

The 250 feet of 1/2-inch three-strand nylon gives you plenty of scope for deeper water, and nylon is meant to stretch and soak up shock loads when the boat surges. The fitted galvanized thimble saves splicing. You'd add your own chain if you want it.

From our buying guide

The Coast Guard's general guidance is to let out five to seven times the depth of water plus the distance from the surface to the bow. Samson says nylon is used in anchor lines because its elasticity absorbs shock loads.

Check before you buy:

  • The length gives you that scope in the water where you anchor.
  • The chain included is what you want, since products include different lengths of chain: 4 ft in some and 15 ft in others.
  • You can get at any rope-to-chain splice, which New England Ropes says to check regularly and remake at any evidence of wear.
