The RuleMate III is a 24V DC submersible bilge pump that switches itself using solid-state sensors, with no separate float switch. One sensor starts the pump once water reaches 2-1/2 inches in the bilge, and another stops it when the level falls to 5/8 inch. The discharge is a 3/4 inch NPSM thread. A check valve built into the pump cuts down on water left behind in the bilge, and a thermal cut-off adds protection for the pump and the vessel.

Our take

The sensors start this pump at 2-1/2 inches of water and stop it at 5/8 inch, with no separate float switch to fit or maintain. The built-in check valve also reduces the water left standing in the bilge after each run.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
