The Rule RuleMate III is a 12 volt, 800 gph submersible bilge pump that switches itself using solid-state water sensors, so no separate float switch is needed. It starts when water in the bilge reaches 2-1/2 inches and stops at a depth of 5/8 inch. The outlet is a 1 inch NPSM thread, with a threaded barb included for 3/4 inch hose. A check valve built into the pump cuts down on water left in the bilge, and a thermal cut-off adds protection for the pump.

Our take

Switching on at 2-1/2 inches of water and off at 5/8 inch means the bilge is left with a thin film rather than dry, and the check valve limits what runs back. The thermal cut-off gives the motor some protection if it overheats.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
