The RuleMate III 1100 GPH is a 24V DC submersible automatic bilge pump. Solid-state water sensors run it, so no separate float switch is needed. One sensor starts it at 2-1/2 inches of water and another stops it at 5/8 inch. The discharge is a 1 inch NPSM thread, supplied with barbs for 1 inch and 1-1/8 inch hose. A thermal cut-off adds protection for the pump and the vessel.

Our take

The 1 inch NPSM outlet comes with barbs for both 1 inch and 1-1/8 inch hose, so a boat plumbed in either size can connect without a separate fitting. The sensors switch the pump on at 2-1/2 inches and off at 5/8 inch.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
