The Rule-Mate RM1500A is a 12V automatic bilge pump rated at 1500 gph, with a 1-1/8 inch discharge outlet. The pump and switch are one unit, so no separate float switch is needed. A sensor starts the pump when water reaches a depth of 2-3/4 inches and stops it once the water is gone. It draws 4.8A and calls for a 7.5A fuse, and it can run dry without motor burn-out.

Our take

The built-in water sensor, which switches the pump on at 2-3/4 inches of water, means there is no float switch to fit. The 1500 gph rating is open flow, though, and about 8% is lost per foot of lift, so size it with your lift in mind.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
