The Rule-Mate RM2000A is a fully automated 12 volt bilge pump rated at 2000 gph, with a 1-1/8 inch discharge. A solid state sensor is built in, so no separate float switch is needed. The pump starts when water reaches 2-3/4 inches and stops at a depth of 3/4 inch. There is no test cycling, so it uses no power until it comes on. The sensors read dielectric constant, so they respond only to water. It draws 8.4 amps.
Our take
Because the sensors measure dielectric constant and respond only to water, this 2000 gph pump is not set off by oil alone. It switches on at 2-3/4 inches of water and off at 3/4 inch, with no test cycling.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
