This is the Rule DB412, a 12V DC dry bilge pump rated up to 4.0 GPM (15 LPM). It is designed to drain the bilge almost dry, leaving 1/8 inch or less, and it has a filter-free design. It self-primes to 9.5 ft (3 m), prevents back flow, and can run dry without damaging the pump. Connections take 3/4 inch (19 mm) hose barbs, and a plastic 90 degree thru-hull fitting is included.
Our take
This pump is designed to leave 1/8 inch or less in the bilge, and it can run dry without damage once the water is gone, so a pump left running after the bilge empties is not a worry. Flow tops out at 4.0 GPM.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
