This is a Rule submersible bilge pump supplied with a Rule-A-Matic 35A float switch, so it comes ready to switch itself on as water rises. It is rated at 500 gallons per hour on 12 volts and draws 2.1 amps, with a 3/4 inch hose connection. The pump is fully submersible, with a heat resistant acetal housing, a stainless steel shaft and a nylon/fiberglass impeller. It has an anti-airlock feature and will not burn out if it runs dry.
Our take
The 2.1 amp draw at 500 GPH on 12 volts keeps the load light on the battery and wiring, while the dry-run tolerance means that when the float switch lets the pump run the bilge down to nothing, it won't cook itself.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
