This Rule 25SA-24 is a 500 GPH automatic bilge pump for 24V systems. It senses water electronically with no float switch: every 2-1/2 minutes it turns on for about one second to check, and if water is there it keeps running until the water is gone. Rule redesigned it so the 24V model reaches its advertised flow at 24 volts, down from 27.2 volts. It includes a backflow preventer and has a thermal cell built in to guard against overheating.
Our take
Because the 25SA-24 checks for water by turning on for about one second every 2-1/2 minutes, it needs no float switch. The 24V version now reaches its advertised 500 GPH at 24 volts rather than 27.2, so the rated flow no longer needs the higher voltage.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
