Manuals

This is Rule's 4000 GPH submersible bilge pump in the 24V version, with a 2 inch discharge outlet. It is a non-automatic model, so a separate float or panel switch has to turn it on. The motor can run dry without burning out, and the pump carries CE and ISO 8849 certification and a 3-year limited warranty. Output falls as the discharge hose rises: Rule's test gives about 77% of rated output with the hose 6 ft above the pump.

Our take

The 4000 GPH rating drops with lift: Rule's tested figure is about 77% of rated output with the discharge 6 ft above the pump. It has no float of its own, so you need to wire a separate float or panel switch.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
