The Rule 14A is a 3700 gph non-automatic bilge pump with a 1-1/2 in discharge outlet, running on 12V and drawing 15.5A. It can run dry without motor burn-out. Being non-automatic, it is switched by a float or panel switch that comes separately from the pump. The maker's testing found about 75% of rated output with the discharge hose 6 ft above the pump, and the pump has a 3-year limited warranty.

Our take

Being non-automatic, the 14A needs its own float or panel switch, so plan the wiring for that. Its 3700 gph is an open-flow rating and it draws 15.5A on 12V; with the discharge hose 6 ft above the pump, tested output is about 75% of rated.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
