The Rule 25SA is a 500 GPH automatic bilge pump for 12V systems that senses water electronically instead of using a float switch. Every 2-1/2 minutes it runs for about one second to check for water, and if water is present it keeps running until the water is removed. The maker says it holds the water between 1/8 inch and 3/8 inch. It includes a check valve to stop back-flow into the bilge and delivers its rated flow at 12 volts.

Our take

The 25SA checks for water only every 2-1/2 minutes, for about one second, so water can sit in the bilge briefly before it kicks in; the maker says it holds the level between 1/8 and 3/8 inch. With no float switch needed, there is one less part in the bilge.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
