The Rule 25D is a 12 volt submersible bilge pump rated at 500 GPH. It connects to 19mm (3/4 inch) bore hose and has an integral strainer with a quick release inlet for cleaning. The maximum recommended discharge head is 2m, and the motor is rated for 1500 hours of life. It has no float of its own: for automatic operation the maker points to Rule float switches. The fuse size is 2.5 amp.
Our take
The 25D calls for a 2.5 amp fuse, so it asks little of a small boat's battery and wiring. It has no built-in float, so for automatic bilge duty you must add a Rule float switch. With a 2m maximum recommended head, keep the discharge run short.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
