The Rule 24DA is a 12V submersible bilge pump from the 24 Series, rated at 360 GPH. It has a 3/4 inch outlet fitted with a check valve, and it includes a backflow preventer so water does not run back into the bilge. Rule redesigned this pump to reach its advertised flow at 12 volts instead of 13.6. A small hole under each strainer tab lets trapped air out to prevent airlocks, and a built-in thermal cell guards against overheating. It is non-automatic, so it needs a panel switch or a separate float switch.
Our take
Rule rates this pump at 360 GPH on 12 volts rather than the 13.6 volts the earlier design needed, so the flow figure is quoted at a voltage a boat's supply can actually deliver. It is non-automatic, so you must wire in a panel switch or float switch.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
