The Rule 53S is a 2000 gph automatic bilge pump for 12V systems, with a 1-1/8 in discharge outlet. It can run dry without motor burn-out. The automatic version senses water by switching on every 2-1/2 minutes for about one second, so no separate float switch is needed. Standby use is 0.60 Amp hours per day, and it carries a 3-year limited warranty.

Our take

The 53S checks for water every 2-1/2 minutes for about one second, so it needs no float switch and standby use is only 0.60 Amp hours per day. Its 2000 gph is an open-flow rating; with the discharge hose 6 ft above the pump, tested output is about 70% of that.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
