The Rule 1500 is a fully submersible bilge pump rated at 1500 gallons per hour, with a 1-1/8" (28.6mm) discharge outlet. It runs on 12 volts DC unless noted otherwise. The strainer is an easy-clean snap-lock design. The motor is ignition protected and will not burn out if it runs dry, and the wiring is marine grade. Operation is described as silent and free of vibration.

Our take

Because the motor won't burn out when run dry, a pump that keeps running after the bilge empties is not harmed. The 1-1/8" (28.6mm) discharge outlet sets the hose size to plan around, and the snap-lock strainer is easy to clean.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
