The Rule 27SA-24 is a 24 V submersible bilge pump rated at 1100 GPH. It senses water electronically, so no float switch is needed, and it still has a manual override. Every 2-1/2 minutes it turns on for about one second to check for water, and it keeps running until the bilge is down to between 1/8 and 3/8 inch. A check valve with a hidden air vent is included, and the shaft is stainless steel.

Our take

With no float switch to fit, the electronic sensing alone decides when this 1100 GPH 24 V pump runs: it checks every 2-1/2 minutes for about one second and keeps water between 1/8 and 3/8 inch. That means a thin film stays in the bilge, not a dry one.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
