The Ronstan Series 50 All Purpose Stand-Up Block has a 2 inch sheave and takes rope up to 1/2 inch in diameter. The sheave is a self-lubricating Acetal polymer, chosen for low friction and durability. The load strap is grade 316 stainless steel, and the cheeks are fibre reinforced nylon that resists impact and UV. A Captive Lock universal head and a slotted pin shackle are fitted, and it mounts with 2 x 5mm fasteners, which are not supplied.
Our take
The Captive Lock head can be set in one of two planes or left free to swivel, so the block can be fixed to one lead or follow a changing one. The 2 inch self-lubricating Acetal sheave limits friction, and the 1/2 inch maximum rope size sets what lines it takes.

Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
