The Ritchie X-23BU RitchieSport is a dash-mount compass with a 2 inch (51 mm) direct reading dial. It fits a standard 2 1/16 inch instrument hole, and the view can be tilted up to 30 degrees. The dial turns on a sapphire jewel and hardened steel pivot, with green NiteVu lighting for night use. The X-23 series has no built-in compensators.
Our take
With no built-in compensators, the X-23BU leaves deviation correction to you, so check it against a known heading once it is fitted. The 30 degree view adjustment lets you tilt the 51 mm dial toward the helm seat instead of leaning over it.

Ritchie says a magnetic compass needs no electrical power to work, and that a GPS gives course over ground, not heading. Magnets, ferrous metals and current-carrying devices near it can cause deviation, so the spot matters too.
Check before you buy:
- It's balanced for where you boat. Ritchie advises buying the zone central to where you boat.
- The dial suits your helm. A flat card is read from above, and a direct-read dial from directly in front.
- You can compensate it, since not every compass has built-in compensators.
