The Ritchie Voyager RU-90 is a flush mount compass sold for sailboat racing, with a black bezel and a blue 3 inch flat card dial. The card turns on a hardened steel pivot with a sapphire jewel movement. There are 45° lubber lines plus extra 90° lines. Lighting comes as an optional NiteVu kit.
Our take
The 45° and extra 90° lubber lines on the RU-90 give more reference points for reading a heading when racing, and the high-visibility blue 3 inch card keeps the numbers easy to pick out. Lighting is an optional NiteVu kit, so plan for that if you sail after dark.
From our buying guide
Ritchie says a magnetic compass needs no electrical power to work, and that a GPS gives course over ground, not heading. Magnets, ferrous metals and current-carrying devices near it can cause deviation, so the spot matters too.
Check before you buy:
- It's balanced for where you boat. Ritchie advises buying the zone central to where you boat.
- The dial suits your helm. A flat card is read from above, and a direct-read dial from directly in front.
- You can compensate it, since not every compass has built-in compensators.
