The Ritchie Venture SR-2-1 is a bulkhead mount compass in black with a blue CombiDial. The dial is 3-3/4 inches, and the compass fits a mounting hole of 4-5/8 to 4-13/16 inches. Blue LED night lighting lights the dial in the dark. It can be mounted at a vertical angle through 40 degrees, and a clinometer (INC-45) comes with it, along with covers for both sides. The SR-CM2 compensator module is sold separately. Ritchie states it is 100% repairable and carries a 5-year warranty.
Our take
The 3-3/4 inch CombiDial needs a 4-5/8 to 4-13/16 inch hole, so measure the bulkhead cutout first. Compensation is a separate part, because the SR-CM2 module is sold on its own, so add it if you want built-in-style adjustment.
From our buying guide
Ritchie says a magnetic compass needs no electrical power to work, and that a GPS gives course over ground, not heading. Magnets, ferrous metals and current-carrying devices near it can cause deviation, so the spot matters too.
Check before you buy:
- It's balanced for where you boat. Ritchie advises buying the zone central to where you boat.
- The dial suits your helm. A flat card is read from above, and a direct-read dial from directly in front.
- You can compensate it, since not every compass has built-in compensators.
