The Ritchie RitchieSport X-10B-M is a bracket mount compass in black with a direct-read dial, so the heading and lubber line are read from straight in front. The dial is 2 inches across and has internal green night lighting. The adjustable bracket covers a mounting range of over 300 degrees, and self-adhesive pads are included. The movement uses a hardened steel pivot with a triple cup sapphire jewel, and built-in compensators are fitted. The maker backs it with a 5-year warranty.

Our take

The bracket's range of over 300 degrees means this compass can go on a slanted console, a windshield frame or an overhead surface and still be turned to face the helm. The 2 inch dial is compact, and the built-in compensators let you trim out local deviation.

From our buying guide

Ritchie says a magnetic compass needs no electrical power to work, and that a GPS gives course over ground, not heading. Magnets, ferrous metals and current-carrying devices near it can cause deviation, so the spot matters too.

Check before you buy:

  • It's balanced for where you boat. Ritchie advises buying the zone central to where you boat.
  • The dial suits your helm. A flat card is read from above, and a direct-read dial from directly in front.
  • You can compensate it, since not every compass has built-in compensators.
