The Raymarine T70164 is an Evolution autopilot package for drive-by-wire boats. It bundles the EV-2 unit for drive-by-wire propulsion, the p70R control head and two SeaTalk ng cabling kits, so the parts for a working system arrive together. The EV-2 joins the SeaTalk ng bus and has its own CAN Bus port that connects straight to steer-by-wire systems, which removes the need for an ACU. The p70R head uses a rotary dial and push buttons. Volvo IPS boats need an optional gateway and extra cabling.

Our take

The EV-2's dedicated CAN Bus port ties straight into a steer-by-wire system and removes the need for an ACU, so one unit fewer goes into the installation. Volvo IPS boats are the exception: they also need an optional gateway and extra cabling.

From our buying guide

Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.

Check before you buy:

  • The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
  • It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
  • On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
