The Raymarine M78713-PZ is an instrument-only thru-hull depth transducer in a plastic housing, working at 200 kHz and supplied with a 30 ft (9 m) cable. A transducer only provides raw data, so it has to be connected to a processor such as a depth sounder or a black box module before it shows depth. Plastic suits aluminum hulls, and any transducer material is fine in fiberglass.
Our take
As a thru-hull 200 kHz depth unit with a 30 ft cable, the M78713-PZ only sends raw data, so it needs a processor to show anything. Its plastic housing is the material recommended for aluminum hulls, and it is also acceptable in fiberglass.
From our buying guide
Raymarine's general guidance is 200 kHz for water under about 60 m (200 ft) and 50 kHz for deep water. In-hull transducers avoid a hole, but lose performance and need a solid fiberglass bottom.
Check before you buy:
- The housing suits your hull. Airmar and Raymarine rule out plastic on a wood hull and bronze on a metal one.
- It connects to your display, since an analog transducer needs an interface.
- A through-hull will be fitted to the maker's guide. Garmin says its own should be installed by a qualified marine installer.
