The Raritan Atlantes Freedom is a 12-volt electric marine toilet with a one-piece white porcelain bowl in household size. It flushes with raw water and uses Vortex-Vac technology to create vacuum inside the unit, so there is no separate remote vacuum pump to mount and plumb. The handle-timed Smart Toilet Control runs a timed flush and lets you control water intake and waste discharge separately. It measures 19 in. deep, 17-3/16 in. tall and 14 in. wide, can be installed above or below the waterline, and replaces the Raritan A812 and A8AR12.

Our take

The built-in Vortex-Vac vacuum means no remote vacuum pump to find space for and run lines to, which keeps the install to the toilet itself. Rated for above or below the waterline, it gives you flexibility on where it sits, and the household bowl keeps it comfortable.

From our buying guide

A vessel with installed toilet facilities must have an operable marine sanitation device that is labeled or certified. EPA says untreated sewage may not be discharged within three miles from shore, and in a No Discharge Zone treated sewage may not be either.

Check before you buy:

  • You have what it needs, since heads may call for 12-volt power, through-hulls and seacocks, or a separate vacuum source.
  • It fits the compartment, since Jabsco says an electric toilet needs more space at the rear than a manual one.
  • If it could sit below the waterline, you'll fit a vented loop as the maker specifies, since Jabsco warns the vent, not the loop, is what stops the siphon.
