The Plastimo Contest 101 is a black compass for vertical bulkhead mounting, with a red conical card. It is made for boats up to 9 meters, and the card has an apparent diameter of 100 mm with graduations every 5°. It reads from both the cockpit side and the cabin side, with a gitometer reminder every 10° and a Viton membrane that takes up changes in liquid volume. The lighting is 12 V. Walls up to 40 mm thick take a threaded rod for fixing.
Our take
The double reading shows the card from the cockpit side and the cabin side, so one compass can serve a helmsman on deck and a navigator below. It is made for boats up to 9 meters, so it is not aimed at larger craft.
From our buying guide
Ritchie says a magnetic compass needs no electrical power to work, and that a GPS gives course over ground, not heading. Magnets, ferrous metals and current-carrying devices near it can cause deviation, so the spot matters too.
Check before you buy:
- It's balanced for where you boat. Ritchie advises buying the zone central to where you boat.
- The dial suits your helm. A flat card is read from above, and a direct-read dial from directly in front.
- You can compensate it, since not every compass has built-in compensators.
