This is a Perko heavy duty battery disconnect switch with two positions, on and off. It is a plain on/off switch rather than a 1-2-all selector, so it cuts a battery circuit and does not choose between batteries. It is rated for 450 amps continuous and 1200 amps intermittent, which means 15 seconds on and 5 minutes off at the higher figure. The face measures 5-1/4 in by 5-1/4 in.
Our take
The rating is 450 amps continuous, but 1200 amps only for 15 seconds followed by 5 minutes off, so the higher figure covers short bursts and not sustained loads. It is on/off only, with no battery selection.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
