Perko's Fig. 228 is a pair of side lights with chrome-plated zinc housings on black plastic bases. They run on 12 volts, the bulbs are included, and the lenses are ultrasonically welded. The lights are USCG certified, with a visibility rating of 2 nautical miles for vessels up to 65 feet. Perko advises against using them in saltwater, so keep that in mind before choosing them for a coastal boat.
Our take
The chrome-plated zinc housings are the catch with the Fig. 228: Perko does not recommend them for saltwater, which narrows them to fresh water use. They are USCG certified, with 2 nm visibility on vessels up to 65 feet.
