Manuals

The Perko 8511DP0USA is a dual battery selector switch with OFF, 1, ALL and 2 positions. It has a polycarbonate body with brass terminals and 3/8 inch studs, and it shares its bolt circle with the 8500 and 9600 series. It is rated 315 continuous and 450 intermittent for 6 to 32 volt DC systems with alternators and generators. The switch is ignition protected, and the knob moves through a 90 degree rotation between positions.

Our take

Ignition protection is the feature that decides where the 8511 can go: it can be installed in the engine room of a gasoline boat. Its ratings of 315 continuous and 450 intermittent, with brass terminals on a polycarbonate body, are the numbers to check against your cable size and engine load.

From our buying guide

Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.

Check before you buy:

  • Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
  • It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
  • If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
