The Orion 1oz Boat Air Horn is a handheld can-style marine signaling horn. The maker says it meets US Coast Guard carriage rules for boats up to 39 feet long, and each can gives up to 12 blasts at 112 dB measured at 10 feet. You screw the horn onto the cartridge, hold it upright and press in short bursts. Do not shake it before or during use. Long continuous blasts can freeze the valve, so let it return to room temperature before using it again.

Our take

Up to 12 blasts from one can is a small supply, and since a long continuous blast freezes the valve, you sound it in short bursts and wait for it to warm before going again. The 112 dB reading at 10 feet is the figure to know.

From our buying guide

A boat of 12 m or more must have a whistle, and one of 20 m or more a bell as well. Under 12 m it need not carry them, but must have some other means of making an efficient sound signal.

Check before you buy:

  • You aren't comparing loudness across makers, since they measure it at different distances, or give no distance at all.
  • You can mount a fixed horn facing forward and as high as possible, as Kahlenberg says to.
  • You have any parts the maker leaves to you, such as a horn button and fuse.
