The Onyx Kayak Fishing Vest in adult universal is a foam vest cut low in profile for paddling. Six straps let you cinch it to fit, and the high foam back is shaped to work with high-back seats. The pockets carry the gear: a large cargo pocket sized for a VHF or pliers, a drop-down tray pocket with an elastic strap for a small tackle box, and zippered fleece-lined pockets. The shell is 400 denier nylon oxford.
Our take
Six adjustment straps let you cinch the vest snug, and the high foam back is made to accommodate high-back kayak seats. The large cargo pocket takes a VHF radio or pliers.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
