The rescueME EPIRB2 Pro is a Category I EPIRB that sends a 406 MHz distress message with a position from GPS, Galileo and Glonass, plus a 121.5 MHz homing signal. Return Link Service confirms back to the beacon that the message was received. NFC lets a phone read the beacon's status through the maker's app. The beacon weighs 0.42 lbs on its own and has a 10-year replaceable battery. A bracket that releases the beacon automatically is included.
Our take
The EPIRB2 Pro's Return Link Service sends confirmation straight back to the beacon, shown as a flashing blue light, so whoever sets it off can see the distress message was received. It is rated for at least 48 hours of operation at -4°F.
From our buying guide
Only 406 MHz beacons alert by satellite. An EPIRB is designed to be mounted on a vessel and a PLB is a portable, handheld beacon for personal use, and registering either with NOAA is mandatory.
Check before you buy:
- It's coded for the US, since a beacon must be registered in the country it is coded for.
- It has a GPS receiver, which the Coast Guard prefers, since a position then goes out at once.
- You know how its battery gets replaced, since ACR and Ocean Signal say the owner must not do it for their models.
