The Ocean Signal rescueME EPIRB1 is a compact emergency position beacon with a 10 year battery life and over 48 hours of operating time. It fixes its position with a 66 channel GPS and links by satellite to emergency services. It starts automatically on immersion and carries two bright strobes for low light, plus a retractable antenna that pulls out when needed. It sits in a manual quick-release bracket.
Our take
The 66 channel GPS and satellite link to emergency services do the core job, with a 48-plus hour operating life to plan around. The bracket is manual quick-release, so there is no automatic release housing on this model.
From our buying guide
Only 406 MHz beacons alert by satellite. An EPIRB is designed to be mounted on a vessel and a PLB is a portable, handheld beacon for personal use, and registering either with NOAA is mandatory.
Check before you buy:
- It's coded for the US, since a beacon must be registered in the country it is coded for.
- It has a GPS receiver, which the Coast Guard prefers, since a position then goes out at once.
- You know how its battery gets replaced, since ACR and Ocean Signal say the owner must not do it for their models.
