The rescueME EDF1 is a compact electronic distress flare from Ocean Signal. It uses LEDs and a lens design that throws a beam of over 30 degrees through a full 360 degrees around the unit, with light also sent up into the hemisphere above so aircraft can pick it up. It runs up to 6 hours on a user-replaceable battery with constant brightness, has four operating modes plus SOS signalling, a battery test function, and is waterproof to 10 meters. Range is quoted at up to 7 miles.
Our take
The EDF1 runs on a replaceable battery rather than a burn-once charge, so you can switch modes and keep signalling. The upward light spread helps aircraft spot you, but six hours is a hard ceiling, so check the battery before you rely on it.
From our buying guide
On US coastal waters, a boat 16 feet or more must carry visual distress signals for day and for night. Some cover only one: an orange flag is day only, and an electric distress light is night only.
Check before you buy:
- You'll reach the required number, which for pyrotechnics is three for day and three for night, since a kit's name is not proof it meets the rule.
- The marked expiry date leaves you time, since a flare's can be no more than 42 months from manufacture, and it's the marked date that counts.
- Anything that needs a launcher has an approved one, and you've checked your state's rules, since the Coast Guard says some states treat them as firearms.
