The Nikon Trailblazer II 8x25 is a compact roof prism binocular with 8x magnification, 25mm objective lenses and a 60.3 degree apparent field of view. The prism design folds up small enough to fit most pockets and packs. It is waterproof and fogproof, and can be submerged to 3.3 ft for up to 10 minutes, though Nikon says it is not for use underwater. The body is aluminum alloy with rubber armoring, and the large focusing knob can be turned with gloves on.
Our take
The waterproof and fogproof build, good for 3.3 ft of submersion for up to 10 minutes, covers a short accidental dunk, but Nikon is clear that it is not for use underwater. The large focusing knob also works with gloves on.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
